Her work is often autobiographical and extremely emotive. It is important to her that her images represent real life and emotion. She uses various techniques and mixes mediums until she has got her required effect. “I like layers and cracks and celebrate non perfection, they remind me of life” - “I will often wash the paint off of the canvas many times, leaving an unusual residue. Some canvases have been painted over again and again, producing layers to play with and scratch away” Anita never uses sitters and prefers to ‘trust the creative process’ whilst painting. She is also an established photographer and community artist.

A recent project, 'Mental?', The launch of a unique film challenging mental health stigma through the eyes of young people.
The participants, aged between 15 and 25 worked together with artist Anita Staff to create thought provoking images and text that challenge the stigma surrounding mental health.
They used photography as a visual language to express their experiences with being in contact with mental health services and lack of awareness and understanding within the wider community. www.mentaleast.org.uk.

Anita is able to work with hard to reach and vulnerable groups and in October 2012, she won the 'The Education and Community Award' at the 2012 Norfolk Arts Award, for "her work with disadvantaged and hard to reach members of the community, using photography and film to help them break down stigmas".

Anita was also nominated for ‘The People’s Choice Award’ which was a huge achievement, being the only independent, non-funded nominee.
